If your website is Flash-based or incorporates many Flash elements, then your online presence is in trouble. Adobe announced last week that it has abandoned all mobile Flash development.
The news release from Adobe explained that they will no longer continue to “adapt Flash Player for mobile devices to new browser, OS version or device configurations,” and instead will focus on alternative application packaging programs and HTML5.
While Flash websites are generally able to be viewed without problems on desktop computers, Flash remains unstable on mobile and tablet devices. Using a Flash player can drain the battery of your smartphone. When Steve Jobs and Apple rejected the Flash plugin in 2007, many considered that to be the signal of a declining medium.
Now, four years later, Adobe Vice President and General Manager of Interactive Development Danny Winokur says, “HTML5 is now universally supported on major mobile devices, in some cases exclusively… This makes HTML5 the best solution for creating and deploying content in the browser across mobile platforms.”
Flash-based websites should begin their transitions into modern, search engine friendly formats. Using Javascript, CSS, and HTML5, which has native support for video, Crown Point Design can help you move away from Flash.
